Arrive at Munich Airport and transfer to your centrally located accommodation (approximately 45 minutes). Head to Marienplatz, Munich’s central square and beating heart, to watch the famous Glockenspiel carillon performance in the New Town Hall tower (11am, 12pm, or 5pm). Explore the surrounding pedestrian zones with shops, historic buildings, and street performers. Visit Frauenkirche cathedral with its distinctive twin onion-domed towers. Enjoy traditional Bavarian dinner at a beer hall with weißwurst, pretzels, and local beer.
Tour the magnificent Residenz, the former royal palace of Bavarian monarchs, with its opulent rooms, treasury, and extensive art collections spanning Renaissance to neoclassicism. Visit Odeonsplatz and Theatinerkirche with its striking yellow baroque facade. Explore Nymphenburg Palace, the summer residence with beautiful baroque and rococo interiors, sprawling gardens, and pavilions. Stroll through the palace grounds with their canals, fountains, and parklands. Return to the city center for dinner.
Take a full-day trip to Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig II’s spectacular fairytale castle perched on an Alpine crag (2 hours from Munich). Tour the romantic castle interior with its elaborate throne room and swan motifs, then visit nearby Hohenschwangau Castle where Ludwig grew up. Enjoy the stunning mountain scenery and charming village of Füssen. The castle inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Return to Munich in the evening.
Visit world-class museums—the Alte Pinakothek for European old masters, Neue Pinakothek for 19th-century art, or Pinakothek der Moderne for contemporary works. Alternatively, explore the Deutsches Museum, one of the world’s largest science and technology museums. Visit the impressive BMW Welt and Museum showcasing automotive innovation. Spend the afternoon in the English Garden, one of the world’s largest urban parks. Watch river surfers at Eisbachwelle, then relax at the Chinese Tower beer garden with 7,000 seats under chestnut trees.
Explore the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s famous outdoor food market with stalls selling regional delicacies, flowers, and specialties. Consider a day trip to Salzburg, Austria (90 minutes by train) to see Mozart’s birthplace and the stunning old town. Alternatively, visit the Dachau Memorial Site for important historical perspective (30 minutes). Enjoy final shopping at stores along Kaufingerstraße or visit any missed attractions. Farewell dinner at the legendary Hofbräuhaus beer hall with live oompah music.
