Itinerary Guide
This comprehensive itinerary is designed to guide you through an exciting journey filled with remarkable destinations and captivating experiences in Kemi.
Arrive at Kemi-Tornio Airport and transfer to your hotel in Kemi (approximately 10-15 minutes). After settling in, visit the spectacular SnowCastle (LumiLinna), one of the world’s largest temporary snow structures rebuilt annually with different themes, architects, and designs. Explore the intricate ice and snow architecture, ice sculptures, winding corridors, and themed rooms illuminated by colored lights creating a magical frozen kingdom. Visit the SnowCastle restaurant for drinks served in ice glasses. Enjoy dinner in town before an evening stroll to admire the illuminated SnowCastle from outside.
Experience the unforgettable Sampo Icebreaker cruise aboard this historic vessel pushing through thick ice on the frozen Bothnian Bay. Feel the power of the ship crushing through ice up to one meter thick, watch from the bridge as the captain navigates frozen seas, and participate in the highlight ice floating experience where you’ll don special survival suits and float in the icy water among ice floes—a surreal and exhilarating Arctic experience. The 3-4 hour cruise includes lunch aboard and certificates. Evening options include Northern Lights watching or relaxing in a traditional sauna.
For the adventurous, spend a night in the SnowCastle Hotel’s ice rooms, sleeping in thermal sleeping bags on ice beds covered with reindeer hides in temperatures around -5°C. Enjoy a romantic dinner in the ice restaurant where everything from plates to glasses is carved from ice. Alternatively, spend the day snowmobiling through surrounding forests, trying cross-country skiing, visiting nearby reindeer farms to learn about Sámi culture, or exploring the Gemstone Gallery showcasing Finland’s gemstone industry with collections of amethysts, tourmalines, and northern gemstones.
Take a day trip to Rovaniemi (approximately 1.5 hours north) to visit the official Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle. Meet Santa Claus year-round in his office, cross the Arctic Circle line, send postcards with special Arctic Circle postmark, visit Santa’s elves’ workshops, and explore the Arktikum museum showcasing Arctic nature and Sámi culture. Alternatively, stay in Kemi for more snowmobile adventures, husky sledding, or exploring the surrounding coastal landscapes and islands. Evening Northern Lights tour to maximize aurora viewing opportunities.
Enjoy a final morning visit to the SnowCastle to photograph any areas you missed or revisit favorite spots in different lighting conditions. If you haven’t stayed overnight in an ice room, consider visiting during different times as the colored lighting changes the atmosphere dramatically. Visit the Gemstone Gallery museum, shop for local crafts and souvenirs, or try ice fishing on the frozen bay. Enjoy a farewell traditional Finnish meal and sauna experience before transferring to the airport with unforgettable memories of Arctic winter adventures.
