This comprehensive itinerary is designed to guide you through an exciting journey filled with remarkable destinations and captivating experiences in Rocamadour.
Arrive via Toulouse or Brive-la-Gaillarde airport and transfer to Rocamadour area (approximately 1.5-2 hours). Settle into your accommodation and experience your first view of Rocamadour’s stunning cliff-side location. Explore the lower village (Cité) with its medieval gates, shops, and restaurants. Walk partway up the Grand Stairway or take the elevator for different perspectives. Enjoy dinner featuring local specialties including Rocamadour goat cheese and Cahors wine.
Climb the Grand Stairway (216 steps) that pilgrims have ascended for centuries, or take the elevator to the Sanctuary level. Visit the seven sacred chapels built into the cliff including the Chapel of Our Lady housing the venerated Black Madonna statue, the Chapel of Saint Michael with ancient frescoes, and the Saint Sauveur Basilica. See the miraculous sword Durandal embedded in rock. Continue up to the Château ramparts for spectacular panoramic views over the village and Alzou canyon.
Explore the stunning Padirac Cave (Gouffre de Padirac), one of France’s most spectacular natural wonders 15km from Rocamadour. Descend 103 meters into the cavern, then take an underground boat journey along a subterranean river discovering magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations in cathedral-sized chambers.
