Itinerary Guide

This comprehensive itinerary is designed to guide you through an exciting journey filled with remarkable destinations and captivating experiences in Copenhagen.

Arrive at Copenhagen Airport and travel to your hotel in the city centre (approximately 15 minutes by metro). After settling in, explore the iconic Nyhavn harbor with its vibrant 17th and 18th-century townhouses in red, yellow, and orange hues lining the canal where Hans Christian Andersen once lived. Enjoy the bustling atmosphere of waterfront cafés and restaurants, historic wooden ships, and street performers. Visit the nearby Amalienborg Palace square to watch the Royal Guard changing ceremony. Stroll to see the famous Little Mermaid statue. Enjoy dinner at a traditional Danish restaurant sampling smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and local beer.

Visit magnificent Rosenborg Castle, a Renaissance royal residence housing the Danish Crown Jewels and regalia in atmospheric basement vaults, with beautiful rooms preserved from the 17th century. Stroll through the adjacent King’s Garden (Kongens Have), Copenhagen’s oldest royal garden. Explore the National Museum of Denmark for comprehensive Danish cultural history, or visit Designmuseum Danmark celebrating Scandinavian design excellence. Spend the evening at enchanting Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second-oldest amusement park (opened 1843) with vintage rides, beautiful gardens, illuminations, and seasonal events creating magical atmosphere.

Take a canal cruise from Nyhavn or Ved Stranden to see Copenhagen from the water, passing the Opera House, Black Diamond Library, Christiansborg Palace, colorful neighborhoods, and modern sustainable architecture. Visit the fascinating Freetown Christiania, an alternative self-governing community established in 1971 with colorful murals, unique houses, creative workshops, and distinct counter-culture atmosphere (photography restrictions apply). Explore the hip Vesterbro district with its vintage shops, cafés, and Meatpacking District (Kødbyen) filled with restaurants and nightlife. Visit Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek museum with impressive collections of ancient and French Impressionist art.

Take a scenic train ride north to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, spectacularly situated on coastal cliffs overlooking the Øresund strait between Denmark and Sweden. The museum features outstanding modern and contemporary art collections, sculpture gardens, and stunning architecture integrating nature and art. Alternatively, visit UNESCO-listed Kronborg Castle in Helsingør (Hamlet’s Elsinore), an imposing Renaissance fortress guarding the strait with royal apartments, underground casemates, and Shakespearean associations. Or cross the Øresund Bridge to Malmö, Sweden for an international day trip.

Experience Copenhagen like a local by renting a bike and cycling through the city’s excellent network of dedicated lanes, perhaps following the harbor circle route. Visit Torvehallerne, Copenhagen’s premier food market with 60+ stalls offering Nordic delicacies, fresh produce, artisan cheeses, smørrebrød, and coffee. Climb the Round Tower (Rundetårn), a 17th-century observatory with a unique spiral ramp leading to panoramic city views. Explore the Latin Quarter with its university buildings and bookshops, shop along Strøget pedestrian street, or visit Assistens Cemetery where Hans Christian Andersen is buried. Enjoy a farewell dinner experiencing New Nordic cuisine or traditional Danish hygge atmosphere.
