Itinerary Guide

This comprehensive itinerary is designed to guide you through an exciting journey filled with remarkable destinations and captivating experiences in Kathmandu.

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel in the lively Thamel district, the tourist heart of Kathmandu. After settling in, explore narrow streets filled with trekking shops, restaurants, handicraft stores, and travel agencies. Recover from your journey with momos (Nepali dumplings) and masala tea. Visit the Garden of Dreams for peaceful escape from the chaos. Prepare for upcoming temple visits by understanding local customs and dress codes.

Begin at the magnificent Boudhanath Stupa, one of the world’s largest Buddhist stupas, walking clockwise (kora) around its base while spinning prayer wheels with Tibetan pilgrims. Visit surrounding monasteries and rooftop cafes overlooking the stupa. Continue to Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu site on the Bagmati River, observing cremation ceremonies (from a respectful distance) and sadhus (holy men) in traditional attire. End at Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) for sunset views over Kathmandu Valley.

Explore Kathmandu Durbar Square, the ancient royal palace area featuring ornate temples, courtyards, and the residence of the Living Goddess Kumari (brief viewing possible during specific hours). Take a day trip to Patan (Lalitpur), the ancient city of artisans known for metalwork and its own stunning Durbar Square with intricate Newari architecture. If time permits, visit Bhaktapur, the best-preserved medieval city with its famous 55-Window Palace and pottery squares.

Take an early morning scenic flight to view Mount Everest and the Himalayan range up close (weather permitting, October-May best). Alternatively, drive to Nagarkot hill station for sunrise views of the snow-capped peaks including Everest on clear days. Visit Changu Narayan, Nepal’s oldest temple with exquisite stone carvings. Return via Bhaktapur for leisurely exploration, trying king curd (juju dhau) and watching potters at work in traditional squares.

Visit Tibetan refugee settlements and carpet-weaving centers supporting Tibetan communities. Join a Nepali cooking class learning to prepare dal bhat, momos, and traditional dishes. Explore Asan Tole, one of Kathmandu’s oldest and busiest market squares with spices, vegetables, and daily Nepali life. Shop for singing bowls, prayer flags, pashmina, and handicrafts in Thamel. Enjoy a traditional Nepali cultural dinner with folk dances representing different ethnic groups.
