Itinerary Guide
This comprehensive itinerary is designed to guide you through an exciting journey filled with remarkable destinations and captivating experiences in Chao Phraya.
Arrive in Bangkok and check into your riverside hotel. Take an evening dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya River, gliding past illuminated temples, the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and modern skyscrapers. Watch Bangkok transform as twilight falls and lights reflect on the water. Enjoy Thai cuisine while experiencing the river’s role as Bangkok’s historic transportation and trade route. Visit Asiatique riverfront development with shops, restaurants, and entertainment.
Start at the magnificent Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) on the river’s banks. Cross to Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) via river ferry, climbing the iconic prang for stunning river views. Visit Wat Pho with its massive Reclining Buddha just steps from the river. Experience authentic transportation on the Chao Phraya Express Boat, Bangkok’s river bus system that local commuters have used for decades, hopping on and off at different piers.
Rise early for a trip to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market (1.5 hours from Bangkok) where vendors sell fresh produce and food from boats creating vibrant scenes. Alternatively, visit Amphawa Floating Market (closer to Bangkok) operating Friday-Sunday evenings. Take a longtail boat tour through Bangkok’s network of canals (khlongs) passing traditional wooden houses on stilts, temples, and glimpses of old Bangkok life along narrow waterways connecting to the main river.
Take a full-day river cruise to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital 80km north. Sail past riverside life, temples, and countryside reaching this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore spectacular temple ruins including Wat Mahathat with its famous Buddha head entwined in tree roots, massive Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and riverside Wat Chaiwatthanaram. Return by boat or road, experiencing the river that served as ancient Siam’s main highway.
Cross the river to Bang Krachao, Bangkok’s “green lung” – a peninsula of jungle, parks, and farms miraculously preserved amid urban sprawl. Cycle through elevated walkways, visit markets, and experience rural atmosphere minutes from downtown. Alternatively, enjoy final riverside activities: morning tai chi by the river, visits to riverside neighborhoods like Thonburi, last-minute shopping at riverside markets, or relaxing at your hotel watching endless boat traffic pass by.
