After settling in, explore narrow streets lined with colonial buildings, art galleries, and boutique shops. Visit the iconic Chinese fishing nets along the waterfront, watching fishermen operate these massive cantilevered nets introduced by Chinese traders. Walk through Princess Street and browse antique shops. Enjoy sunset views over the harbor and fresh seafood dinner at a waterfront restaurant.
Begin at St. Francis Church, India’s oldest European church where Vasco da Gama was originally buried. Visit beautiful Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace) featuring Kerala murals depicting Ramayana scenes. Explore Jew Town with its antique shops, spice warehouses, and the stunning Paradesi Synagogue built in 1568 with Belgian chandeliers and hand-painted Chinese tiles. Evening Kathakali classical dance performance with elaborate makeup demonstration.
Tour the aromatic spice markets where Kerala’s famous pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger are traded as they have been for millennia. Learn about the spice trade that brought explorers to these shores. Join a cooking class learning to prepare traditional Kerala dishes using fresh spices. Visit the lively Fish Market and vegetable markets observing daily local life. Optional harbor cruise at sunset watching fishing boats, container ships, and the cityscape.
Take a day trip to nearby backwaters – either Alleppey (1.5 hours) or Kumarakom (2 hours) for a day cruise through Kerala’s famous waterways. Glide through canals on houseboats or smaller vessels, observing village life, paddy fields, coconut plantations, and traditional living along the banks. Enjoy Kerala lunch on board. Return to Cochin or visit Cherai Beach for Arabian Sea sunset and fresh seafood at beach shacks.
Explore Cochin’s thriving contemporary art scene at Kochi-Muziris Biennale venues (December-March), art galleries in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, and creative spaces showcasing Indian and international artists. Visit Bolgatty Island with its palace-turned-hotel and gardens. Shop for last-minute souvenirs including spices, tea, handicrafts, and contemporary art.
